Each piece of Wirkkala’s Ultima Thule bar-ware collection features a sophisticated, intriguing pattern that evolved organically during production as the glass burned the surface of the wooden molds. Though the Ultima Thule collection contributes to Iittala’s international breakthrough in the 1960’s, it still looks as modern today as it did then.
A versatile genius synonymous with Finnish design, Tapio Wirkkala’s contributions to the world of functional art include everything from elegant glassware to the design of banknotes. During his world-renowned career, Wirkkala earned a vast array of awards, including three gold medals at the Triennale in Milan in 1951 and another three in 1954.
The Iittala Company was founded in 1881 in Finland by a Swede named Petrus Magnus Abrahamsson. It was not until the 1920s and 30s, that Iittala as we know it came into being. In that era of burgeoning creativity, Iittala began to produce more artistic pieces. Most of Iittala porcelain and glass products are still made in Finland.
